This is just so pretty and so very well made - I nearly kept it - especially as it has one carat of natural and stunning rubies!
I have done a little research and also had my Gemmlogist take a good look at it.
The piece was assayed in Birmingham in 1956 and the makers mark is MB for Marion Ballard, first registered in 1937 as a Silversmith & Craftswoman.
The style and design is very deco looking so this designer was defiantly looking back rather than forward for inspiration. It is her interpretation of a Butterfly and the result is stunning. It is hand made to a very high standard in 18ct yellow gold and there is not one angle that I wouldn't photograph close up with confidence.
My Gemmologist has had a look at the two 1/2 carat (50 point) Rubies and they are Natural and almost certainly not heat treated (one can never be 100% sure without removing them from the settings). The colour is a lovely as you can see (I have taken some very good close ups - see below). Natural stones of this quality are just so hard to come by today.
Six tiny real pearls are set either side of the Rubies and their lustre is beautiful. The wings are pierced and also all the sides. It fastens with a pin and c clasp and has a safety chain for extra security.
It comes in an Asprey Leather box (not the original).
