Product information

Rare Scene High Relief Victorian Cameo

There is no doubting that the man in the picture is Adonis as he ripples with muscular definition in front of the Goddess Venus who tries in vain to seduce him away from his hunting. It's a rare scene from the tragic narrative poem by Shakespeare and one that I have not come across before.

Carved from Pink Conch, which gives it the palest pink canvas to contrast the white relief figures and arching branches of the tree under which the couple stand. This extraordinary, deep relief Cameo carving is in excellent condition. It is set in a very attractive high carat gold frame of intertwining acorns and oak leaves not dissimilar to ones that Castelani designed around the same period (1860's).

Condition
The frame has a 2mm nick at 12.30 (clock face) that is less than 1mm deep and the pin on the reverse has had a historical repair (a later, rollover, safety faster has been lead soldered on) but is very secure. The money is in the Cameo here and that is in perfect condition, there are no cracks or stress marks even when held up to the light.

Size
Height: 2 and a 1/4" (5.5cm) x Width: A fraction under 2" (5cm)

Metal Purity
The frame tests at 18ct

Weight
20g
