About : The Art of Jakob Bengel - Art Deco Jewellery made of Metal and Galalith
I love Jakob Bengel pieces and am really pleased that his designs and work are gaining more and more popularity and recognition.
With his roots in BAUHAUS, his Chrome and Galalith pieces made in the 1930's in Germany are geometric masterpieces. The epitome of the Art Deco movement before the war and accessible to the masses.
Galalith is a type of early plastic made from casein, a milk by-product! If you ever get to Idar-Oberstein in Germany, the Bengal Jewellery factory and museum is a must. It has not been touched since the 1930's and is a fascinating place for all jewellery historians. I was lucky enough to visit a few years ago (and unlucky enough to get locked in for an hour whilst they went for lunch!) and meet the direct descendants of Jakob. If you are interested in collecting Jakob Bengal or just want to learn about the fascinating history of this company I recommend the book "Art Deco Schmuck" written by C Webber-Stober and published by Arnoldsche it is written in both German and English.
